(No Longer) Skirting the Issue: Bold Colors and Prints for Work

April 25, 2013

Happy (almost) Friday, lovelies!

Sorry for the delayed post, everyone, I have been feeling rather icky these past couple of days, and it was raining and cold yesterday…SO not the perfect weather for taking outfit pictures. ๐Ÿ™‚

I don’t know about you, but I am a sucker for skirts!!  With the weather getting warmer, I have been more than happy to put away my thick winter tights and allow my legs to get a glimpse of the sun.  However, as a (young looking) teacher, I must take care to dress professionally so I am not confused with another student (seriously, this has happened more times than I can count!).
I must admit something, though…up until this past year, I had been stuck in a color rut in my professional-attire skirts.  I always longed to be more adventurous when shopping for work attire (and hey, what fashionista doesn’t?), but I would always put the colorful, printed skirt back on the rack and buy the neutral colored option instead (usually in a black or a grey).  But when I started seeing colored pencil skirts and printed skirts paired with button down shirts and sophisticated peplum blouses, I knew this was a trend I could not work without (pun intended), and therefore needed to step outside my comfort zone.

This spring, especially, has brought with it some very trendy skirts in delicious colors, prints, shapes, and textures (anyone seen the leather pencil skirts from Milly Edith or ASOS??).
While I am not advocating wearing the electric blue python print leather pencil skirt from ASOS (you read that right, click on the link if you don’t believe me!), I am encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone of wearing only grey and navy and black skirts every day.

I have gathered for your visual (and shopping) enjoyment, some rather fantabulous skirts!  Not only do they have oh-so-lovely colors and prints, and are work appropriate, but the prices are also quite tempting.  For the most part, though, these skirts hit about at the knee or right above it. SO, without skirting the issue further (teehee), a collection of my favorites:

Skirting the Issue

Orange wrap skirt:  Forever 21 // Green floral print:  Forever 21 (also comes in yellow) //
Mint pencil skirt:  Forever 21 // Striped skirt:  J.Crew // Printed pencil skirt:  JCPenney
Yellow Peplum:  Forever 21 // Anchor print skirt: J.Crew Factory // Tweed:  Target‘

I’ve rounded up a good mix of solid colored, printed, textured, and silhouetted skirts as ideas for spicing up your professional wardrobe.  If you are just now dipping your toes into the pool of colored or printed skirts, I recommend starting with the classic pencil skirt in a different color and pairing it with a solid colored blouse, or even just a plain white oxford shirt.  A white blouse has magical powers of transforming a playful skirt into a sophisticated outfit!

Here are a couple of examples from the list paired with a white blouse:

Tweed: Professional
Shirt:  Stylebop.com, less expensive option here // Skirt:  Target // Shoes:  Nine West //
Bag:  Tory Burch (plus 25% off) // Necklace:  Stella & Dot // Watch:  Kate Spade //
Wide Bangle:  Aldo // Bangle Set:  Kris Nations, less expensive here

Pairing the mutli-colored tweed skirt with a white button down gives it a more sophisticated air.  Pair it with colorful accessories that match the colors in the thread and you have a chic, professional look for work.
Anchor Print Skirt: Professional
Skirt:  J.Crew Factory (on sale for $39.50!) // Shirt:  Stylebop.com, less expensive option here
// Shoes:  Steve Madden // Clutch:  Tory Burch // Necklace:  Etsy (special at Brina Box!!) //
Chain bracelet:  Brooks Brothers // Anchor bangle:  Betsey Johnson
There is nothing classier than nautical style!  Again, pairing the skirt with a plain white button down dresses it up a little, and by adding the red and gold accessories, this outfit would make any captain, er boss, proud to have a well-dressed lady at the helm…ok, maybe I took the nautical theme a little too far…
Printed skirt: professional
Skirt:  Forever 21 // Top:  DKNY, look for (much!) less // Shoe:  Bloomingdales (sold out), similar here // Bag:  Target // Necklace:  Etsy // Blue bangle:  Ruby Lane // Knot bangle:  Kate Spade
Earrings:  Fantasy Jewelry Box (sold out) similar here.
Since this skirt has a playful, feminine print, I paired it with a white peplum top and royal blue accessories.  The peplum top makes for a feminine silhouette and adds to the sophistication of the outfit.  The blue bag, necklace, and bracelet add a little more color dimension to the ensemble but still keep it looking polished.

You don’t have to settle only being a fashionista from 5-9 when you could rock the latest color trends and patterns all day long and still look professional!  So go ahead, try a different color pencil skirt, or if you’re feeling more adventurous, splurge on a colorful print or texture.  The possibilities are endless, and these skirts or more versatile than you think :).  They can easily take you from daytime professional to nighttime party animal.

What is your favorite skirt on the list?
What bold color or pattern have you tried out for work?

Happy Thursday, lovelies!
XOXO, Whit
