Neon and Stripes to Brighten a Rainy Day

April 19, 2013

Happy Friday, lovelies!

I cannot believe it is Friday already!  This week has been filled with sunshine, warm temperatures, and the occasional rain shower.
Today I am trying playing with the neon yellow trend. If you follow me on Instagram, then you have seen this skirt before when I paired it with navy gingham, navy tights, and neon jade accessories.  Let’s just say that when I try a trend out, I usually go big or go home. ๐Ÿ™‚

However, I have been rather hesitant to wear this skirt again because of a little incident that happened a few weeks back.  Allow me to share my story with you :).

I was substitute teaching at a high school I frequently substitute at, and I wore this outfit to school that day (keep in mind, this school is home to the School of Creative And Performing Arts program).  I was so excited to try out the new neon trend but at the same time, I liked the challenge of keeping it school appropriate.  I carefully put together my outfit, wearing tights underneath to keep the skirt from appearing too short (and because it was FREEZING that day), and I added my button-down gingham shirt to keep the look polished.  I decided to go bright with my accessories, (hoping they would inspire Spring to get its act together!) and I set off for work.  I knew I was taking a small risk with my outfit, what with the different colors, but I was too excited to change my outfit.  I didn’t receive any funny looks when I arrived, and all the way through lunch, everything was dandy.

After lunch and during my hallway monitoring duties, I passed some teachers in the hallway, and as soon as I turned the corner, the following conversation took place:
Female teacher:  “Did you see her outfit??”
Male teacher:  “Yeah, and?” (gotta love men’s indifference to fashion, sometimes!)
Female teacher:  “It was…interesting…It looks like something a teenager would wear if they were trying to be fashionable”.

Oh.  Not only was this teacher insulting my choice of colors, she was also commenting on how I wasn’t dressed like a teacher should dress.  I quickly looked over my outfit.  “No, my skirt wasn’t too short and my shirt wasn’t too tight.  My hair was done nicely, and I didn’t have chipped nail polish on my fingernails.  It’s gotta be the colors”, I thought.

I’ll be honest, I was a little hurt that someone insulted my outfit.  I was super excited about what I was wearing and had spent extra time trying to put it together, too!

I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Looking back, I shouldn’t have been surprised that someone objected to my outfit.  It was rather colorful, and the color combination is not something that everyone would try.  Do you think it was too much for school?

I was inspired by Meghan’s post from Everyday Fashion and Finance How to Wear Neons: Part Two. (Go check out her post, it’s fantastic!), and I wanted to try my skirt again, and pair it with stripes.
The great thing about this skirt is that in certain lights, it doesn’t appear neon at all!  For instance, in today’s pictures, the skirt appears to be a more muted yellow rather than an in-your-face-good-morning-sunshine-helloooo!-i’m-neon yellow :D.

Colors I received in my Monthly Maven Box <3 You can find the colors here and here

Loving the coral trend in lip color!  Lip color is called Electric Orange by Mabelline, so I was expecting a BRIGHT orange color, but it looks more coral-y on.  What I am really craving is this orange shade called Flirt by Chanel….Oo la la!

The Deets:  My entire outfit, minus the necklace, is from Forever 21.
It’s such a great store to for cheap, trendy pieces!
Shirt:  Forever 21 (sold out), similar (but more expensive) here
Skirt:  here (color is sold out, love the peach one!)
Necklace:  Etsy (seriously, check it out!!)
Shoes:  here (also in jade and black)
Belt:  here
What are your favorite neon colors?

Happy Friday, lovelies, and I’ll see you all Monday!

XOXO, Whit

I think it's so weird that she said that! Not to be hateful toward that lady, but I'm guessing she was dressed kind of frumpily? I think people try to make themselves feel better by putting others down. Anyway, I love the outfit! I have worn something really similar to work!

Haha, actually, she was dressed professionally but not frumpy and she wasn't old (I would say mid-twenties). But I do agree, she probably feels too timid to try out bold colors at work.
I would love to see the similar outfit you have worn to work! You should post it on Instagram and tag me in it. ๐Ÿ™‚
