Polka Dot Stylin’ Part 1: Casual Fare

April 11, 2013

Hello lovelies!
Happy (almost) Friday to everyone, hopefully your week has been filled with sunshine and summer-like temperatures (70s and 80s the past couple of days!!).  I don’t know about you, but I could not be happier with how the weather has been.

As promised, I am presenting to you some ways of styling polka dots.  For some, this pattern might be a little intimidating because it is a playful one, and if done wrong, can appear childish and immature.  I am going to break this down into two or three posts, starting with polka dots as accessories and casual wear, and then venturing into working it into your work attire.
If you are new to this pattern, I would recommend starting out small by adding the pattern into your style through accessories such as a clutch or a ballerina flat and keeping it casual.  Just a little bit can go a long way when playing with this trend!

Playing with Polka Dots

1)  I used the yellow polka dots for a color contrast with the teal and blue, and to add a bit of pattern interest.  Don’t you just love the teal and sapphire jewel tones?
2)  I pattern mixed with stripes (a preppy chic way of pattern mixing) and blended the polka dots into the outfit by matching the color of the polka dots with the jeans.  I love navy, orange and pink together!!
3)  In this one, I let the belt and shoes add a slight dressiness to the casual air of the outfit to keep it polished but easy going for running errands.
If you are pretty comfortable with mixing in polka dot accessories, the next step would be to try it as a main outfit piece but still keeping it casual, and add basics to enhance it.
Today, I chose a polka dot shirt, the same one from yesterday’s post, and added colorful shorts and accessories to complete the look.

Don’t you just love mint and fuchsia together???
I am completely obsessed with this bubble necklace!
I apologize for the poor quality of the pictures, the light outside was very poor. 😛

XOXO, Whit
