CLASSY SASSY

FIRST SNOWFALL, THICK TEXTURED LAYERS, & SCARF OBSESSION

November 13, 2013

Sweater:  Forever 21 (similar) // Skirt:  The Loft // Scarf:  The Providence Story | Coat:  Calvin Klein via Burlington Coat Factory (almost exact) // Tights:  Target // Shoes:  Tory Burch  | Bracelet:  J.Crew (sold out)

The first snow fell yesterday, and it was COOOOLD!  At first I wasn’t happy that winter seemed to be trying to butt it’s way in, but I was actually sad when the snow began to melt throughout the day.  I love dressing in layers, and I was quite comfortable in my thick sweater, scarf, and tights.  Granted, I did not like shivering every time I stepped outside, and a coat only covers up a cute outfit, but I would rather layer up than be hot (you can only take off so many pieces of clothing before people start looking at you funny)!

I started out wearing my flats, but then I quickly switched to my black ankle booties and threw on a pair of thick socks.  It was way too cold, and with snow on the ground, boots just had to be worn.  Not going to lie, I am somewhat obsessed with my wedge ankle booties, aaand pairing thick socks with them and scrunching them down around the ankle is another trend I am now crazy about.  Guess I need to add colorful socks to my shopping list!

For most of fall and winter, I turn to my thick sweaters and skirts when getting dressed in the morning.  Cable knits, tweeds, wool, etc. are some of the best types of fabrics to keep in one’s body heat, and not to mention, they just look so classy ;).  And colored tights?  They have become my best friend when wearing skirts, and if you get the right pair (like this pair from Target), they will actually keep your legs pretty warm! (My hands are the only cold part on my body in that last picture.)  Add my go-to accessory, the blanket scarf, and my cold-weather outfit is complete.  Besides my riding boots, scarves were the other accessory that I wore almost every single day last fall and winter.  So much so, that my students actually commented on how they’ve never seen me without one!

A little background, I started taking voice lessons while I was a sophomore in high school.  My vocal teacher stressed the importance of always bundling up and always keeping my throat warm (scarf in the fall, thicker scarf in the winter, scarf in the springtime, and if you have a summer cold, wear a scarf then, too!).  I nodded out of respect, but inwardly I thought she was a little cray.  Scarves???  Those thick ugly things that your mother makes you wear when she’s cold?

So I only half-followed the advice, wearing a thick scarf in the winter.  And then I went to Germany sophomore year of college, where scarves were EVERYWHERE, and not just worn during the summertime (this was right before scarves became a fashionable everyday accessory in the Midwest).  I was hooked.  I brought home my first scarf, and I felt like the biggest trend-setter ever because I literally was the only one wearing a scarf on my campus (and quite possibly my town, but that’s just wishful thinking).

And then scarves exploded everywhere which meant everyone was wearing them but also meant that scarves were in every store and that meant more options for me, and then I grew up and fell in love with a certain plaid blanket scarf, and then we made beautiful plaid babies, which only made me want more beautiful plaid babies, and now we live happily ever after.

And that is how I got my plaid blanket scarf obsession.

Happy Wednesday, lovelies!!
