Laid-Back Thursday: Mint, Colorblocking, and Nude/Neon

June 20, 2013

Happy (almost) weekend, lovelies!
This week has been a very difficult week for me, most of you know I interviewed for a teaching position on Monday, and it went really well!  The principal and other two teachers said my resume and teaching portfolio were outstanding, as well as the answers I provided to the questions they asked me.  But then Monday evening I found out through Facebook (from a colleague) that they hired someone else.  I was devastated to say the least, and then Tuesday morning I received the email from the principal.  I know you’re wondering why didn’t I say anything on Tuesday about it.  I received the email only a few minutes after I posted it. 😉

I have been substitute teaching for the past year and a half, and have only had one other interview besides this one.  Eight times out of ten, teachers who have had years of teaching under their belts are hired, and prospective first year teachers are not even interviewed.  Which is why I have only had two interviews the past year, out of the ten schools I have applied to.  It has been very discouraging, when you receive encouragement and praise from teachers for which you have substitute taught, and from the staff in charge of the interviews.

I know God has something better planned for me, and I know I need to keep trusting Him, even though I cannot see what He is doing.  It’s very difficult to wait patiently!  When I received the email saying that they had decided to offer the position to someone else, I cried.  Like, not just a little bit…Alot.  I felt utterly discouraged, angry at God, desparate, and wondering if I was good enough.  To be honest, I am still battling those feelings, but God has been comforting me with his promise of something better. I have received SO much love and encouraging words from friends and family the past couple of days, encouragement to keep pressing on, to not give up, to keep trusting God.  I don’t know what I would do without them!

To keep myself ocupado from feeling sorry for myself and dwelling on the what-ifs, my friend M and I went shopping.  One of my friends tweeted something to me that said “When life starts to bring you down, pray.  And then go shopping”.  How AWESOME is that???  That’s exactly what I did.  First, I went with my neighbor to buy herbs, hanging baskets, and a lemon tree for my patio (SUCH a blessing), and then M and I went to the mall.  We went window shopping (I didn’t buy any clothes, but it was still cathartic!), bought some picture frames for prints I had ordered, came home, and cooked some Italian.  Something about pasta so comforting!

Yesterday I spray painted the picture frames, did laundry, cleaned the kitchen, set up a Stella & Dot trunk show (which I will be bringing to you ASAP), answered blog emails, filled out another teaching position application, ordered some fabric, organized my Pinterest boards (heehee), sketched some dress designs, and planned out some upcoming sewing projects.  WHEW, to say I stayed busy to keep my mind off of things would be an understatement.  Actually, I have had a lot of fun tackling projects I have had on my to-do list for quite some time!

The Deets:
Shirt:  Forever 21 (old) // Shorts:  J.Crew // Shoes:  Coach (old), similar
Clutch:  Target, similar (but more expensive!)  // Necklace:  Forever 21, // Bow:  American Apparel (old)
Bracelets:  Chain, mint, colorblocked, and black bangle Forever 21; Anchor– Kiel James Patrick
This clutch is actually not a clutch at all….It’s supposed to be a tablet case!  I have been looking everywhere for a neon colorblocked envelope clutch for a few months now, and when I saw this tablet case at Target, I knew I could make it work as a clutch.  It was just too cute to let the label restrict it’s use!

What are some disappointments you’ve had in your life?

I'm going through the same thing of applying to jobs and not getting the "yes". It's very frustrating but I'm working part-time until something comes along. I applied to grad school as a back up plan, so who knows. It's actually kind of crazy cause I had talked myself out of applying but then the school in my hometown extended their deadlines(weird, right?) so I felt as though God was telling me to apply. I applied and I'm waiting to hear back. Praying that good things come your way with this new application you filled out! Keep your head up!

I'm so sorry to hear about the job 🙁 I can only speak for my school but budgets are getting really tight and teachers are switching schools like te used too. I think there are a lot of young teachers ( including my student teacher) who are in the same boat as you. God will work things out, but it can be so hard to sit and wait! I'm saying a prayer for you right now.

I am so sorry this job did not work out for you Whitley. I wish they knew what a gem they just let go. But I know that God has a better plan for you! Disappointment is tough but you will see His reasoning soon enough. I think you might want to get started on that other job situation we discussed. It may be a good lead for you(: Keep your chin up! Whitley, I am so sorry to hear about the job. I agree with Susan wholeheartedly. I know disappointment is so hard, and it is easy for us to sit here and tell you it will all be okay. But, it will. You have a strong faith in God, and that will get you through this. My mom was a teacher and now a principal, and it has always made me sad to see the struggles that teachers go through. Especially the young ones and those who really truly care about educating our youth. Something will happen for you – just keep your head up and don't lose confidence in yourself!

I'm so sorry to hear about the job! It always sucks to get bad news about a job you so richly desire. I've been in your boat before. I had applied to many, many schools some responded and a lot didn't but my mom always taught me to never give up hope. That something better will come your way! So I will tell you the same Don't give up!! And keep trying!! Something bigger and better is just waiting out there for you! You know your potential and how great you are, others will see it too!! 🙂

PS. I love reading your blog! I love reading blogs about fashion and also blogs of fellow teachers, they always inspire me 🙂
