CLASSY SASSY

mustard skinny jeans denim chambray herringbone vest preppy fallfall fashion

Mustard, Chambray, and Herringbone Vest

September 9, 2013

Happy Monday, lovelies!
I apologize for my long absence last week, I have been working on some things to grow the blog, as well as doing a MASSIVE reorganization of my bedroom and closet.  “With great power comes great responsibility”…or rather, with lots of clothes comes the need to update one’s organizational system .:D

If you all read my post from last week, then you already know I am on a shopping hiatus for this month, and possibly the next.  I must say, it has been a little easier once that first week passed.  Yes, I have not shopped for a little over a week, and yes I have seen QUITE a few items that were added to my wishlist (kinda hard not to make one!), but I am slowly working through my shopaholic tendencies.  I know, I know, I did and said this the last time I went on a 3-month shopping hiatus, but this isn’t something that can be cured in a few months.  I guess I will always have shopaholic tendencies (what woman doesn’t love to shop???), but I can definitely work on the frequency and intensity in which I shop. 😀

Ok, enough of the heavy stuff, let’s get to the real reason you stopped by this morning (haha).  Once again, summer is deciding that it is going to have to be dragged out, kicking and screaming.  Upper 80s/low 90s, 80+ percent humidity, definitely not the fall weather we all have been wishing for with the arrival of September!

But, being the stubborn person that I am, I refuse to acknowledge that summer is still right outside my door (literally), and I am happily planning fall outfits, anyways!  Today is no exception.  I am combining some of my favorite fall staples into one outfit, and I will be wearing them with pride!

The Deets:
Pants:  boutique in Germany, (similar) // Chambray:  J.Crew Factory (look for less) // Vest:  J.Crew Factory
Clutch:  Louis Vuitton // Sandals:  Target (sold out) // Pearls:  Etsy // Bangle:  Forever 21 (similar)
I snagged this highly coveted vest by calling around to several different stores and finally found one that had my size (plus I had an additional 25% off with my new J.Crew card, so I snagged it for a pretty good price!).  I wrestled with whether or not to spend much on a vest, but I considered how much I would wear it, how versatile it would be, and if I would want to wear it again next year.  The answers to all of those questions was a very positive one!  I have already worn this vest with shorts and a skirt, and now with skinny jeans, and because of it being a grey color, it will easily go with anything!  And in answer to if I would wear it again next year; vests never go out of style, so that would be a resounding yes!
If you do not want to pay full price for this vest or you can’t find your size, I would suggest either waiting for some sales to happen or to check out this amazing look-alike from Walmart for a fraction of the cost!  Never in my life would I believe that Walmart could come out with something so adorable, but then again, I am always surprised.  Several of my Instagram friends posted this on their accounts, and many of them said that it was a comparable dupe for the J.Crew Factory and retail versions.  It doesn’t have the black borders on the pockets or edges, but if you know how to sew or know someone who can, I think that would be easy to fix.  My IG friends also said that the Walmart vest has a boxier, more utility fit to it, but it is a puffer vest, after all.

Mustard and chambray are going to be pretty popular color trends this fall!  Chambray is really a popular staple year-round, so it’s nice that our spring and summer staples can remain in rotation!  Chambray really can be paired with anything you have in your closet.  It looks good dressed down with colored denim and flats, or tucked into a pencil skirt with heels, and a sweater or blazer worn over it.  I have two chambray shirts, one light wash and one dark wash, and I really do wear them on a weekly basis!  They perfect for adding layers and dimension to an outfit, and if grab a printed one like the polka dot shirt in this outfit, it’s also an easy way to add some print in your ensemble!
Looking for more ways to wear mustard?  Check out this post for three different ways you can wear mustard this fall!
So my lovelies, I hope you all will have a wonderful week this week, and if any of you check out the vest from Walmart, let me know!
Would you splurge or save on the herringbone vest?

I have been dying to find that vest. I just checked Walmart and they are sold out of every size. Any other recommendations of where to find this vest? Ebay finds are way too expensive for the JCrew one.

Wow, that Walmart lookalike is pretty impressive! I bought the original J. Crew vest preowned from someone for $50, not cheap but much less than the original retail price! It's so cute.

Love that chambray shirt! I've been eyeing them all summer. And I'm cracking up over here as I'm reading that you're happily planning fall outfits despite the weather … I'm in total denial about the heat too … I even busted out my black opague tights the other day, talk about jumping the gun! 🙂

I love the color combo you used! I would have never thought of pairing those two colors with my herringbone vest, but it looks so good! I love that you also included another pattern with the polka dots on your chambray!

    Cute look all together!

What size did you get in the vest? Just curious about the fit!

    Hi Meg!
You can't tell looking at the pics, but the vest is actually a size too big! When I purchased the vest, I had no idea I would need to size down a size, and by the time my vest arrived, the size I needed was sold out. I'm not sure how the herringbone vests from other boutiques fit, but if you purchase the one from J.Crew Factory, I recommend sizing down a size!
