Deutschland Travels Part 1: Packing, Travel, and Food

July 23, 2013

Hello lovelies!
Wow, I cannot believe it has been over three weeks since I last wrote a blog post!  Our trip to Germany was amazing, and it was very hard to leave, knowing that it would be another year before we went back, but we are happy to be home.  This was my fourth time travelling to Germany (SUPER blessed, I know!), and each time I go, it always seems new to me!  This year I think it felt new to me because I was able to understand alot more of the language than I have in previous years, and I was able to actually have small conversations!  That’s a pretty big deal, considering my husband’s grandparents do not speak English, and as courteous as Germans are towards non-German speakers, I still wanted to blend in as much as possible!

Over the next few days I’ll share with you some details from our travels.  It will be pretty difficult to to squeeze 18 days (and about 475 pictures!!) into just three or four posts and…not so many pictures. ๐Ÿ˜€   So here it goes…

I am ashamed to say that I did not pack until the day before our trip.  I am somewhat of a procrastinator, but it’s not because I don’t want to perform a task, it’s simply because I have absolutely no idea where to begin. in this case, my plight was trying to pick out enough outfits to look presentable (ok, maybe I was going for fashionista-wardrobe) without overpacking….14 outfits for 18 days isn’t too much, right??? ๐Ÿ˜€  My dear, sweet husband, ever the minimalist when it comes to packing (aren’t all men??) suggested that we could take just ONE large suitcase…without carry-ons (HA).  I quickly dissuaded him from such nonsense and was allowed my own large suitcase but no carry-on other than plane essentials.  I could work within those parameters.

Anyways, when I finally got to packing, I realized that I own an exorbitant amount of colored denim…and that I still desired a few more shades (I have a problem, ok??); I had no idea what shoes to pack, other than that I needed to make sure I had a pair for every occasion.  And the most important plight:  what to wear on the plane.  Something comfortable, layers are a must, and something that can easily be removed when going through security checks.  Lace up shoes were out, as are high heels (seriously, how in the world did Kim K. travel in THESE???), so I opted for a cute pair of flats, button down shirt, blazer, pants, and scarf.  I think I did a pretty good job :D.

Blazer: H&M (old, similar) // Shirt: J.Crew Factory // Pants: H&M (old, similar here and here),
Shoes: Target // Bag: Louis Vuitton (gift) // Scarf: gift

We were supposed to leave on Monday the 1st at around 5:30 in the evening, but when we arrived at the airport, we discovered that our flight had been delayed by at least an hour, due to incoming storms (which would have then caused us to miss our connecting international flight), so our flight was rescheduled for…the next morning.  Now, after not sleeping a wink the night before due to excitement, I was not a very happy at the prospect of losing another night of sleep AND losing a day of our time with my in-laws (I’m one of those crazy people who actually enjoys spending time with her mother-in-law!).  So we took our luggage home, went out for a very nice Italian dinner, went to bed, and left without a hitch in the morning.

I took some fabulous pictures from the air on our flights, absolutely beautiful, and tried to sleep on the transatlantic flight.

We arrived!! At about 9:30am Germany time (2:30am home time!), our last plane finally touched down.  It was a very long and exhausting trip, but we finally made it!

*******************WARNING:  THE FOLLOWING PICTURES ARE NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART:  INTENSE CUTENESS TO FOLLOW.  OBSERVERS HAVE BEEN WARNED*****************
I needed to preface the next few pictures by saying that these are my dogs.  Yes, they live in Germany, and I only see them once a year, but they are mine.  Two french bulldogs and one boxer, I call the frenchies the Schweins ๐Ÿ™‚  If you have ever been around a French Bulldog, or even have the privilege of owning one, you know why I call them Schweins.
Meet Josef (pronounced “Yosef”)
Bobbi (boxer), and Willi….aka, the Pinki Schwein ๐Ÿ˜€
ok, I’ll end the cuteness for now….
We unpacked, had breakfast, and just chilled for the rest of the day.  A typical German breakfast (or any meal, really) consists of bread, different jellies, cheese, sausages, and tea.  As most of you already know, I am a gluten-free vegan because of food allergies, and most German cuisine is not conducive to this.  Europe does have significantly less levels of gluten in their grains (no GMOs!), and we were able to find some lactose-free cheese.  As for the sausage?  I had decided to put that on vacation for two weeks so I could fully enjoy German food (which is oh so good, btw!).

All of the bread you see is bought at a local bakery every other day.  Everything is freshly made, no packaged sliced bread like ours, and the breads are significantly more dense than American bread.  Oh, and one of the great things about Germany?  Bread, cheese, and sausages are SIGNIFICANTLY less expensive there.  As in, a third of the price of American prices.  And they taste 10x better.
That weekend, M’s sister came home to visit and she, my mother-in-law and I went out for a little shopping at H&M.  Let’s just say that for my first time out shopping since I started my closet remix challenge almost three months before, I was overly cautious about going crazy.  I sort of wandered through the store, not really picking anything out for fear of relapsing (I am a recovering shopaholic!) but I did find some pretty awesome sales, so it wasn’t too bad ๐Ÿ˜€
I was SUPER excited I got my jean jacket!!!  I had been bemoaning the fact that I had given mine away right before they came back in style, and I fell in love with the Nolita jacket from J.Crew during my  personal styling session, but I just couldn’t bring myself to pay that price.  Aaand it’s pretty obvious what was on my mind that day…I tend to have a polka dots obsession.
The next evening we had a really nice dinner with M’s grandparents and his uncle, and we had bread, wine, cheese, some vegetables, and a delicious thing called Mett.  Mett looks like and has the consistency of fine ground beef, but it is freshly ground and eaten in the same day.  I know, you might be making nasty faces at the screen right now, but it really is delicious!  It’s eaten on bread, normally with onions and freshly ground pepper.  Small pickles are usually eaten with it as well.
So my lovelies, I will stop here for now, as I have already written a rather long post. Stay tuned for Part Two, more local sights, and Part Three will be our weekend in ร–stringen and Heidelberg!
